In the last few years, I have grown to admire a lot of street photography with prodding from YouTube channels that have exposed me to many of the techniques and many of the masters of the genre.
But my first love among types of photography belongs to architectural photography: I can spend hours admiring Julius Shulman’s masterly documentation of Los Angeles or Balthazar Korab’s shots of Eero Saarinen’s buildings. And indee d I have spent many more hours making my own versions of Shulman’s photos of L.A.’s Bunker Hill, most notably his photos of the headquarters of the L.A. water authority.
Korab’s black-and-white masterpieces of Saarinen’s TWA Terminal (now the TWA Hotel at Terminal 5 at JFK Airport) provided me with inspiration for my own photography — though the terminal has such luscious red tones that color seems more appropriate:
The lighting conditions are quite challenging, since during a sunny day, the bright light streaming in from the windows contrasts with the cavernous interior:
But even the simple geometry of lights being emitted from a building (a high school in Playa Del Rey below) or Christmas decorations hanging off a house (in the same neighborhood, also below) provide great inspiration to me:
